F.M.U is an integrated agropastoral farm created in response to the need for new strategy for eradicating hunger and malnutrition in eastern Congo (UVIRA). The farm is situated in Kawizi, near the City of Uvira, South Kivu Province, 124 km south of the province capital, Bukavu (Democratic Republic of Congo). Just a few kilometers from Ruzizi River, it is also located a the extreme north end of Lake Tanganyika and situated 25 Km from Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi.
| | The idea of creating an integrated agro pastoral farm in Territory of Uvira grew out of concerns that years of massive internal displacement coupled with forced migration due to uncontrollable insecurity, sexual violence against women, and endless war conflicts appear to be dragging people into terrible conditions of hunger and malnourishment.
The combination of all of these factors continues to force people in rural areas of the Territory of Uvira to not only flee their homes but also abandon their agricultural and pastoral activities. For that reason, food prices in the Territory of Uvira are increasingly higher than other places. The FMU project’s general objective is to contribute to improving the general standard of living of the population in the Territory Of Uvira.
The specific project objectives are to: (a) Make food more accessible to those most in need; (b) Increase farmers’ income;
(c) Improve soil conservation and productivity
